On April 10, 2025, a group of exchange students from Honghe University, People’s Republic of China, participated in an impressive Thai cultural exchange activity at the Arts and Cultural Center of Chiang Mai Rajabhat University. They had the opportunity to engage in the hands-on practice of making “Tung,” a traditional flag of significant cultural importance in Northern Thailand.
The activity was part of a student exchange program between the two universities, aiming to promote understanding of cultural diversity and foster positive relationships between students from both countries. The students from Honghe University learned about the history, spiritual significance, and detailed process of making Tung from experts in Lanna art and culture. They diligently crafted their own Tungs, receiving close guidance and assistance from students of Chiang Mai Rajabhat University.
The making of Tung is a long-standing tradition in Northern Thailand, believed to possess protective powers and symbolize offerings in Buddhist rituals. This close-up experience of learning the art of Tung making not only provided the international students with a new cultural experience but also fostered an appreciation for the value and beauty of Thai handicrafts.
เมื่อวันที่ 10 เมษายน 2568 คณะนักศึกษาแลกเปลี่ยนจากมหาวิทยาลัยหงเหอ สาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีน ได้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมแลกเปลี่ยนวัฒนธรรมไทยอันน่าประทับใจ ณ ศูนย์ศิลปและวัฒนธรรม มหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏเชียงใหม่ โดยมีโอกาสได้ลงมือปฏิบัติในการทำ “ตุง” ซึ่งเป็นธงพื้นเมืองที่มีความสำคัญทางวัฒนธรรมอย่างยิ่งในภาคเหนือของประเทศไทย
กิจกรรมดังกล่าวเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโครงการแลกเปลี่ยนนักศึกษาระหว่างสองมหาวิทยาลัย โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อส่งเสริมความเข้าใจในความหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรมและสร้างความสัมพันธ์อันดีระหว่างนักศึกษาจากทั้งสองประเทศ นักศึกษาจากมหาวิทยาลัยหงเหอได้รับความรู้เกี่ยวกับประวัติความเป็นมา ความสำคัญทางจิตวิญญาณ และขั้นตอนการทำตุงอย่างละเอียดจากผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมล้านนา พวกเขาได้ลงมือประดิษฐ์ตุงด้วยตนเองอย่างตั้งใจ โดยได้รับการแนะนำและช่วยเหลืออย่างใกล้ชิดจากนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏเชียงใหม่
การทำตุงถือเป็นประเพณีที่สืบทอดกันมาอย่างยาวนานในภาคเหนือของไทย โดยเชื่อกันว่าตุงมีพลังในการปกป้องคุ้มครองและเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของการถวายเป็นพุทธบูชา การที่นักศึกษาต่างชาติได้มีโอกาสสัมผัสและเรียนรู้ศิลปะการทำตุงอย่างใกล้ชิดเช่นนี้ ไม่เพียงแต่เป็นการเปิดประสบการณ์ใหม่ทางวัฒนธรรมเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นการส่งเสริมให้เกิดความซาบซึ้งในคุณค่าและความงดงามของศิลปะหัตถกรรมไทยอีกด้วย
